Playground turf is turf with a job to do: it has to cushion falls. That means a shock pad or foam underlayment rated for the fall height of the equipment above it, not just a softer-feeling product. Ask for the pad's rated critical fall height and compare it with the tallest platform or swing on the set.
Commercial and HOA work is a different conversation: larger areas, heavier foot traffic, sometimes a board approval, and often a mix of turf for usable lawn and water-wise planting everywhere else. We connect property managers and boards with the same vetted installer we refer homeowners to.
Playground Turf Done Properly
The safety performance of a playground surface comes from the system under the turf, not the turf. A shock pad sized to the fall height, a base that drains so the pad does not stay wet, and a short, durable turf on top. Ask for the test standard the pad is rated to and keep the paperwork.
West Valley City's turf ordinance is a good example of how cities think about play areas: it sets a minimum pile height of 1.5 inches for residential turf, with a reduced 1.25-inch option for high-traffic areas like playgrounds (UPR, May 2022).
HOA And Commercial Common Areas
Large lawns that nobody uses are where water-wise landscaping saves the most. The realistic plan for many common areas is turf where people actually walk and play, and planted, drip-irrigated beds elsewhere. Water district incentives in Utah generally pay for the planted part, not the turf, so the mix matters for budget too; see the Utah turf rebate guide.
For a board, ask for a phased scope with a price per phase, the product's warranty in writing, and the maintenance plan: brushing, infill top-up, and how often.
| What to ask for | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Pad fall-height rating | Matches the surface to the tallest equipment |
| Base depth and drainage | A wet base fails faster and holds heat and odor |
| Seam layout drawing | Seams in traffic lanes are where wear shows first |
| Warranty in writing | Who honors it, and for how long |
What It Costs
Commercial and playground jobs are priced like lawns plus the pad and any extra base or edging, so the published lawn ranges on our cost guide are the starting point, with the pad added on top. Large areas usually come in at a lower per-foot price than a small residential job because setup is spread over more square feet.
Playground and Commercial Turf — Questions Salt Lake City Homeowners Ask
Is artificial turf safe under a swing set?
Only with a shock pad rated for the fall height of that equipment. Turf alone is not a fall surface. Ask for the pad's rating in writing.
Do you work with HOAs and property managers?
Yes. We refer boards and managers to the same vetted local installer, who can scope common areas in phases and price each one.
Can turf go in a park strip?
It depends on the city. Salt Lake City does not allow it, and Taylorsville's water-efficient standards bar lawn in park strips and require vegetation cover there. Check your city's code first.
