Artificial Turf Questions — Salt Lake City

The questions Wasatch Front homeowners ask most before they book a turf estimate, about cost, city rules, water rebates, heat, pets and how our referral service works, answered straight and with sources where a number is involved.

How much does artificial turf cost in Utah?

Published guides disagree. HomeAdvisor (June 2026) lists turf material at $2 to $8 per square foot plus $4 to $9 for labor; Lawn Love (December 2025) puts installed turf at $5.45 to $20 per square foot, average $12.75. A HomeYou estimate for a 535 square foot job in Bountiful came to $19 to $23 per square foot. The base work, product and size of your area decide where you land, which is why a measured written estimate matters.

Will my water district pay me to put in artificial turf?

Generally no. Utah Water Savers pays up to $3 per square foot to remove lawn, but requires at least 50% plant cover on drip and says artificial turf is not eligible. Weber Basin does not pay for turf areas, and Central Utah Water's programs require plants. Washington County is the exception, allowing permeable turf in place of mulch in a rebated project. Any site promising a Wasatch Front turf rebate is wrong.

Is artificial turf allowed in my city?

It depends. Salt Lake City does not allow it in front yards, park strips or corner side yards. KSL's 2024 survey found Lehi, West Valley City and St. George allow it anywhere on a residential lot, while Orem, Ogden, South Jordan, Sandy and West Jordan allow it with restrictions, and Provo is strict. Check your city's code and your HOA before you buy.

Does artificial turf really save water?

It removes the lawn's irrigation, which is a large share of Utah home water use; Utah State University Extension reports about 60% of residential water is used outdoors. Turf still needs occasional rinsing, and nearby trees and beds still need water. How much you save in dollars depends on your rate and whether your outdoor water is metered.

Does artificial turf get hot in a Utah summer?

Yes. In direct sun it gets noticeably hotter than living grass. Shade, lighter-colored products and a quick rinse help. Plan shade for kids' play areas and dog runs.

Are you the turf installer?

No. Wasatch Turf Experts is a referral service. We connect you with one independent, vetted local turf installer serving the Wasatch Front, who does all the work and is responsible for its own licensing, insurance and warranty. There is no cost to you for the referral.

Will my request go to several companies?

No. Your request goes to one installer only. It is not sold, shared with other contractors or sent to a list, so you get one call from one company.

How long does an install take?

Most residential lawns are a few days on site once scheduled; putting greens and large or sloped areas take longer. The installer gives you a schedule with the written estimate.

What should a turf estimate include?

The square footage, the turf product and its warranty, base depth and material, how the base is compacted, drainage and grading, edging, infill type, removal and haul-off of the old lawn, and the total. If a bid leaves out the base, ask why.

Can I install turf myself?

Many people do, and material-only pricing is much lower. The work is mostly excavation, base compaction and seaming, which is where DIY installs usually go wrong. If you go DIY, rent a plate compactor and do not skimp on the base.
