Artificial Turf in Mapleton, UT

Mapleton requires front yards to be landscaped within a year of occupancy and says nothing about artificial turf in the code we read. Its park strip guide excludes turf from rebates.

Mapleton, population about 13,114 (Census ACS 2020–2024), has no artificial turf rule that we could find. A third-party copy of Section 18.90.050 says single-family front yards on new subdivision lots must be landscaped within one calendar year of the certificate of occupancy. At least 30% of the area not covered in hardscape must include vegetation, such as turf, plants, shrubs or trees, and hardscape may cover no more than 45% of the front yard setback. The section lists turf as sod or seeded area and does not mention artificial turf (Mapleton Chapter 18.90, third-party copy). That copy shows amendments by Ordinance 2024-03, dated April 10, 2024.

Parkways in new developments have their own section, 18.90.120. Parkways two feet or wider may be turf grass or an approved xeriscape design with 30% plant cover within three years, and narrow ones under two feet may use pavers or concrete. Artificial turf is not mentioned. Ask the city before you plan a park strip, and read our park strip guide.

Park Strip Rebates Exclude Artificial Turf

Mapleton's own water-wise park strip design guide, printed in its water element, says projects that replace lawn with artificial turf are not eligible for the rebate, and quotes up to $1.25 per square foot for the Flip Your Strip program. The guide also says the removal must be voluntary and the applicant must have no unpaid water bills (Mapleton Water Element). The current Utah Water Savers page lists $3.00 per square foot for lawn replacement and also says artificial turf is not incentivized (program details). Mapleton is on the eligible list (eligibility, page 2). Our rebate guide covers the steps.

Irrigation Water Tied to a Cleanup Well

Mapleton's pressurized irrigation system exists because of a contamination problem. In the mid-1990s groundwater contamination from the Ensign Bickford property forced the city to disconnect City Well No. 1 from drinking water. The well has been pumped continuously since 1998 to clean the aquifer, and its water feeds irrigation for the northwest part of the city. By the end of 2022 the system had 1,821 active connections, with dry mains that could add about 1,500 more. The city's goal is 212 gallons per capita per day by 2030. All connections except some city properties are metered, and the city had 3,655 drinking water connections at the end of 2022 (same water element). Ask the city whether your lot waters from irrigation or drinking water.

Mapleton Homes at a Glance

Source: U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2020–2024 5-year estimates, via Census Reporter. Estimates carry margins of error. Nearly every home is single-family detached. The city's water element describes past development as rural, with large lots and large homes, and a 2022 city staff report noted that larger lots in Mapleton make lawn limits matter for water use (city staff report, Nov 2022). Larger yards mean larger turf quotes, so measure first.

Costs

Our artificial turf cost guide has current ranges. HomeAdvisor (June 2026) lists about $2 to $8 per square foot for material plus $4 to $9 for labor. On a 1,200 square foot front yard, Lawn Love's $5.45 to $20 per square foot installed (Dec 2025) is about $6,540 to $24,000, by our arithmetic and not a quote. Neighboring Springville and Spanish Fork handle turf differently.

Turf Questions From Mapleton Homeowners

Does Mapleton allow artificial turf in front yards?

We found no Mapleton rule that names artificial turf. Section 18.90.050 requires front-yard landscaping within one year of occupancy, with at least 30% of the non-hardscape area in vegetation. Ask Community Development how synthetic turf counts.

Can I use artificial turf in a Mapleton park strip?

Section 18.90.120 lists turf grass or an approved xeriscape design for parkways two feet or wider. It does not mention artificial turf. Park strips are in the public right-of-way, so ask the city first.

Does Mapleton offer a rebate for synthetic grass?

No. The city's park strip guide says projects that replace lawn with artificial turf are not eligible, and the Utah Water Savers program does not incentivize it.
