Artificial Turf vs Sod in Utah: What the Water Bill Really Looks Like

Turf removes lawn sprinkler water, but at Utah water rates the saving on the bill is small next to the install price. Here is the math for artificial grass, synthetic lawns and sod, so you can decide on the right reasons.

Updated

People search "artificial turf vs sod" for two reasons: they want to know which costs less up front, and they want to know whether fake grass pays for itself in water. Sod is cheaper to install. Whether turf wins on water depends on three numbers: how many gallons your lawn drinks, what a gallon costs where you live, and whether your outdoor water is metered at all.

We are a referral service, not an installer, so none of the prices here are ours. The dollars below are our arithmetic on published figures and are labelled modelled.

How Much Water a Utah Lawn Uses

Kentucky bluegrass needs 24 to 30 inches of water over Utah's five-month watering season, a Salt Lake City Public Utilities figure cited by Utah State University Extension (USU Extension). One inch on one square foot is 0.623 gallons, so a lawn uses about 15 to 19 gallons per square foot per season. On 1,000 square feet that is roughly 15,000 to 19,000 gallons, or about 20 to 25 ccf (one ccf, 100 cubic feet, is 748 gallons).

USU Extension also reports that about 60% of residential water is used outdoors, which is why lawns get the attention.

What That Water Costs in Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City Public Utilities publishes sample monthly bills for city customers in 2026: $47.15 at 8 ccf and $104.77 at 21 ccf (SLC Public Utilities). The $57.62 difference over 13 extra ccf works out to roughly $4.43 per ccf. That is our blended approximation, not a published rate, and it includes any usage-linked charges in those samples.

Why the Bill Rarely Pays for the Turf

On those numbers, water alone does not repay an artificial turf install on any sensible timeline. Salt Lake County and irrigation meter rates differ from the city's, and many Davis, Weber and Utah County homes irrigate from a secondary system billed on a flat rate until metering arrives. State law requires secondary water to be metered for every user by January 1, 2030 (SB 125, 2024). That will change who sees a saving.

The honest case for turf is time, usability and watering restrictions: no mowing, no mud, no brown patches in August. If you are weighing money alone, sod plus a smart controller is the cheaper lawn.

What Sod Costs to Keep

Sod's costs sit in the yearly bill, not the install: water, mowing, fertilizer and reseeding. We do not publish a dollar figure for those because we have no Utah source for them. Price your own: your last summer's water bills, your mower and fuel, and your time.

Where Turf Does Save Water and Money

  • Side yards, dog runs and shaded strips where grass struggles and gets watered anyway
  • A lawn you already water heavily, on a metered supply
  • Hybrid yards: turf where you need a surface, planted beds elsewhere
  • Note: Utah water-district rebates generally pay for planting, not turf, see the rebate guide

Turf vs Sod Questions

Is artificial turf cheaper than sod in Utah?

Not up front. Turf is installed at about $6 to $17 per square foot on published figures, and sod costs less to put down. Over many years turf removes mowing and watering costs, but on water alone the payback is very long by our arithmetic.

Does fake grass save water in Utah?

Yes, it removes the lawn's sprinkler water, roughly 15 to 19 gallons per square foot per season for bluegrass. Turf still gets rinsed, and nearby trees and beds still need irrigation.

How much does a synthetic lawn save on a water bill?

In Salt Lake City, about $90 to $110 per 1,000 square feet per season on our modelled math. Your figure depends on your rate and whether your outdoor water is metered.

Is there a rebate for replacing sod with artificial grass?

Generally not on the Wasatch Front. The main programs pay to replace lawn with living plants.
