Wasatch Front winters mean snow, hard freezes and thaw cycles that move clay soil. Synthetic turf is made for outdoors, but winter shows weak bases and careless shoveling. Guidance below comes from turf vendors and sports-turf bodies; check your own product's warranty.
Snow on Artificial Grass
Light snow melts through flow-through backing and a draining base. For heavy snow, vendor guidance is to clear it before it packs and hardens, use a plastic shovel or a soft broom, and leave a thin layer rather than scraping to the blades (SiteOne). Sports-turf maker FieldTurf recommends leaving a crust of about 1 to 1.5 inches when plowing fields (FieldTurf). Residential guidance varies, and plowing or snow blowers can tear fibers and void a warranty, so check yours before the first storm.
Ice, Salt and De-Icers
Retailers advise against rock salt and chemical de-icers, which can clog drainage, and warn that walking on frozen blades can snap them. Let ice melt on its own where you can.
Freeze-Thaw and Clay
The visible turf is rarely the problem. Water trapped in a thin or clay-bound base freezes and heaves, producing ripples, low spots and open seams in spring. That is a base problem the installer should have prevented; see how turf is installed.
How Long Does Artificial Turf Last?
Manufacturers commonly warranty residential turf for around 8 to 15 years, per our lawn page. We found no independent Utah lifespan study, so treat warranty years as the manufacturer's promise, not a measured result. UV, traffic, pets and the base decide the real life. Ask who honors the warranty and what it excludes.

Winter Turf Questions
Can you shovel snow off artificial turf?
Yes, with a plastic shovel or soft broom, clearing before it packs down and not scraping to the blades. Check the warranty.
Does artificial grass freeze and crack in Utah?
The turf itself generally handles cold. Problems in spring usually come from a poor base that heaves during freeze-thaw.
Can I use salt on artificial turf?
Vendors advise against it because it can clog drainage. Let ice melt, or follow your manufacturer's guidance.
