American Fork, population about 37,109 (Census ACS 2020–2024), grew from a historic core into a mix of older and newer neighborhoods. We could not find a published rule specific to artificial turf in the city code. A January 2026 draft rewrite of the city code (Section 14.17.100, Water Conservation and Efficiency Standards) would cap lawn at 35% of the landscaped area on single-family lots and bar lawn in park strips (American Fork draft code rewrite, Jan 2026). In that draft, "lawn" means irrigated grass that is mowed. The draft does not say whether synthetic turf counts. It is a draft, so ask the city what is in force today.
Most of the city waters from pressurized irrigation, a separate non-potable system. It runs from April 15 to October 15, with odd and even address days and a 1 am to 11 pm window (American Fork Pressurized Irrigation). The city is fitting meters on every irrigation connection. New connections started in 2019 and older ones in 2022. Artificial turf needs no irrigation water, so a metered system can lower the cost of a front lawn you rarely use. Rebates are a different story. American Fork is on the Utah Water Savers eligible list, but the Central Utah Water Conservancy District program pays for plants and does not pay for artificial turf (Utah Water Savers program details). See our rebate guide.
What to Ask American Fork City Before You Install
Because the code is being rewritten, the safest move is a short call or email to Planning before you sign anything. Ask these questions and write down the answers.
- Is artificial turf allowed in the front yard, and does it count toward a lawn limit?
- Is it allowed in the park strip between the sidewalk and the street?
- Do you need a permit or plan review for turf?
- Has the January 2026 code rewrite been adopted, and when does it apply?
Older Yards, Big Trees, Old Sprinklers
American Fork's housing is older than some of its neighbors. The typical home was built around 1998, and about a third of homes date from 2010 or later. Many established yards have mature trees and sprinkler systems that were built for grass. Turf over tree roots needs care. Keep the base open near the trunk, and plan for leaf and seed drop on the surface. Our turf removal and replacement page covers stripping old sod and capping or rerouting sprinkler lines.

Turf Questions From American Fork Homeowners
Does American Fork allow artificial turf in front yards?
We could not find a published rule specific to artificial turf. A January 2026 draft code rewrite limits lawn to 35% of landscaped area and bars lawn in park strips, but it does not address synthetic turf. Ask American Fork Planning before you plan a front-yard install.
Can I get a Utah Water Savers rebate in American Fork for artificial turf?
No. American Fork is on the Utah Water Savers eligible list, but the Central Utah Water Conservancy District program does not pay for artificial turf. It pays $3.00 per square foot to replace lawn with plants that reach 50% perennial cover. Do the rebate project first, or choose turf and skip the rebate. You cannot count the same area for both.
When does American Fork's pressurized irrigation turn on?
The system runs from April 15 to October 15 each year, and dates can shift if they land on a weekend. The city drains and winterizes the system at the end of the season.
