Artificial Turf Pros and Cons for Utah Homes

Synthetic grass is a trade, not an upgrade. Here is what you gain and give up on the Wasatch Front, with the numbers we can source and the ones we cannot.

Updated

Fake grass sells itself in a drought: no mowing, no watering, no brown patches. The brochure leaves out heat, rules, rebates and environmental criticism. We are a referral service, so we have no reason to oversell either side.

Pros of Artificial Grass in Utah

  • No mowing, no lawn irrigation, no mud and no brown patches in August
  • Removes the lawn's sprinkler water, about 15 to 19 gallons per square foot per season for bluegrass (USU Extension figure, see our water math)
  • Usable in every season, good for dog runs, play areas and shaded or sloped strips where grass fails
  • A putting green or play surface you cannot grow in a Utah backyard

Cons of Synthetic Turf in Utah

  • Up-front cost: published installed ranges run about $5.45 to $20 per square foot (see cost guide)
  • Heat: far hotter than grass in direct sun, see the heat guide
  • Rules: Salt Lake City bars it in front yards and park strips, and HOAs can restrict it, see HOA rules
  • No rebate: Utah Water Savers says artificial turf is not eligible and cites environmental harm, see rebates
  • Environment: Salt Lake City officials have raised microplastic and PFAS concerns (Deseret News, 2024)
  • A bad base fails in a freeze-thaw winter, see the installation guide

Who Turf Fits Best

Turf suits back yards, dog runs, side yards, play areas and putting greens, where use matters more than looks. It suits front yards least, because that is where city rules bite. Many Utah homes do best with a hybrid: turf where you play, planted beds where you do not.

Artificial Turf Pros and Cons Questions

Is artificial turf worth it in Utah?

For usability, yes in many back yards. For water bills alone, our math says payback is very long. Check city and HOA rules first.

What are the disadvantages of fake grass?

Cost, heat in direct sun, city and HOA restrictions, no water rebate, and failure if the base is poor.

Is synthetic grass better than real grass?

It depends what you need. It wins on maintenance and water; real grass wins on cost, cooling and rule compliance in front yards.

Does artificial grass add value to a home in Utah?

We found no Utah data on resale value and will not guess.
