Dog owners are the largest group asking about artificial grass. They want an end to mud and dead spots, and they worry about smell, heat and whether dogs can tear it up. All three have real answers. This page is about living with a dog on turf; our pet turf service page covers what installation and pricing look like.
Why Dog Turf Smells, and When It Does Not
Turf itself does not smell. Urine that sits in the base does. Vendor guidance points to the same cause: moisture held in the backing and a base that does not drain, which lets bacteria grow. Flow-through (fully permeable) backing and a compacted crushed-rock base let liquid pass down and away instead of pooling.
Infill choice matters too. Vendors sell zeolite and antimicrobial infills said to bind ammonia and slow bacteria (vendor overview). Those are product claims, not independent tests, so ask for the spec sheet and keep expectations modest. Antimicrobial infill is published at $0.30 to $1.80 per pound (Lawn Love, Dec 2025).
Daily and Monthly Upkeep
- Pick up solids as you would on grass
- Rinse the spots your dog uses with the hose, more often in summer
- Use an enzyme cleaner made for synthetic turf for lingering odor
- Brush the pile so blades stand and infill stays spread
- If smell returns after cleaning, suspect drainage under the turf
Heat, Digging and Paws
Direct sun makes synthetic grass much hotter than living grass, which matters to paws; see does artificial turf get hot in Utah. Dogs can scratch at seams and edges, so tell the installer if yours digs and have the perimeter secured along fences.
What Dog Turf Costs in Utah
Pet turf follows lawn pricing with upgrades on top. Published figures put installed turf at $5.45 to $20 per square foot (Lawn Love, Dec 2025), and a 300 square foot dog run models at about $1,800 to $5,100 on our cost guide arithmetic. Small runs cost more per foot because setup and haul-off are fixed. Ask for the run and the main lawn priced separately.

Questions Dog Owners Ask
Is artificial turf good for dogs?
It can be, if it is built for pets: flow-through backing, a draining base and a suitable infill. Plan shade for July and August.
Does artificial grass smell like dog urine?
Only when urine is held in the base or backing. Good drainage and regular rinsing prevent most of it.
What is the best fake grass for dogs?
The best product is the one with full flow-through backing, a short dense pile and an installer who builds a permeable base. Ask for spec sheets rather than a brand pitch.
How much does a dog run cost in Utah?
About $1,800 to $5,100 for 300 square feet on our modelled math, before pet upgrades. A measured written estimate is the real number.
