Turf pricing is confusing because published guides disagree by a factor of three. Some quote material only, some quote installed, some are national averages and some are tiny-job estimates where setup costs dominate. We publish the ranges side by side with where each came from, so you can see the spread rather than one number that happens to suit a seller.
We are a referral service, not an installer, so none of these figures is our price. The number that counts is the written estimate the installer we refer gives you after measuring your yard.

What That Means For A Typical Yard
Our arithmetic, labelled modelled: square footage multiplied by the combined HomeAdvisor material plus labor range ($6 to $17 per square foot), plus Lawn Love's grass removal range where there is a lawn to take out. Real bids land anywhere in or outside these bands depending on the base, the product and access.
| Area | Turf, installed (modelled) | Plus removing a lawn (modelled) |
|---|---|---|
| 300 sq ft side yard or dog run | $1,800 – $5,100 | + $260 – $550 |
| 600 sq ft backyard lawn | $3,600 – $10,200 | + $530 – $1,100 |
| 1,000 sq ft lawn | $6,000 – $17,000 | + $880 – $1,840 |
| 400 sq ft putting green (HomeAdvisor $15 – $40) | $6,000 – $16,000 | + $350 – $740 |
Modelled by us from the published ranges above. Rounded to the nearest $10. Small jobs often price above the per-foot range because setup and haul-off are fixed costs.
What Moves The Price
Base work is the biggest variable. Removing sod and soil, bringing in and compacting crushed rock, and grading so water drains away from the house is labor and material that does not show once the turf is down. On Utah clay that holds water and heaves in a freeze, it is also where a cheap install fails.
Turf grade is the second. Face weight, pile height, backing and whether it is a pet product all change material cost. Some cities set minimums; West Valley City's 2022 ordinance requires at least 50 ounces per square yard face weight and 1.5-inch pile, which rules out the thinnest products.
- Size: small areas cost more per square foot
- Access: no gate wide enough for equipment means hand work
- Slope and drainage: more base, more edging
- Old lawn or old turf to remove and haul away
- Extras: putting cups, fringe, shock pad for play areas, edging
Do Rebates Lower The Cost?
Not for the turf itself, in most of Utah. Utah Water Savers pays up to $3 per square foot to remove lawn, but only when the replacement is at least 50% perennial plant cover on drip irrigation, and its FAQ says artificial turf is not eligible (utahwatersavers.com). Weber Basin and Central Utah Water's programs also exclude turf. The full picture is in the Utah turf rebate guide.
How To Compare Bids
Put two bids side by side on the same square footage and check each line: turf product and warranty, base depth and material, compaction method, drainage, edging, infill type and amount, removal and haul-off. The lowest total with the thinnest base is usually the most expensive turf you will buy, because it gets done twice.

What is a fair price per square foot for turf in Utah?
Published guides range from about $5 to $20 per square foot installed, with material and labor together at $6 to $17 on HomeAdvisor's figures. Small or difficult areas run higher. A measured, itemized bid is the only fair comparison.
Why are putting greens so much more per square foot?
The turf is a specialty product, the base is shaped and compacted to tighter tolerances, and greens are usually smaller, so fixed costs are spread over fewer feet.
Does the estimate cost anything?
No. The installer we refer measures and prices your project in writing at no cost and with no obligation.
